DNA Testing
Most organizations registering horses today are requiring DNA testing to verify parentage and to establish an evaluation that can be used if your horse is stolen. PMHA can randomly be matched against the DNA codes of both parents. We do have this match done periodically to spot check for errors. The test cost is $35.00 and is in addition to the fees required for registration (included with each registry on the Fee Schedule).
Equine Parentage Verification
The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) has developed a highly effective DNA-based equine parentage verification program sing DNA technology to identify "microsatellites" or "STRs". The extensive genetic variation of STRs makes them efficient tools and they are currently being applied to animal and human identification. Microsatellites have extensively studied for the characteristics required of any DNA markers utilized for genetic testing including stable Mendelian inheritance and low mutation rates. VGL's DNA markers have been validated with parallel analysis of hundreds of parentage cases using DNA and conventional markers.
PMHA Program
PMHA requires all registered Morabs to have a DNA test on file. This rule has been in effect since 2000. Morabs foaled prior to June 30, 2000 are exempt unless: 1) the Morab is a Stallion, or 2) the Morab is a Mare used for an active breeding program.
Summary
- All Morabs, Mares, Stallions and Geldings are required to be DNA tested as part of registration.
- Morabs engaged in breeding programs are required to process a DNA test prior to breeding.
- Geldings foaled prior to June 30, 2000 are not required to test, nor are older horses not used in any PMHA breeding program.
- Any breeding program using AI are required to cross match with sire and dam.
Process
- Submit the online form and the fee to PMHA.
- PMHA will contact a vendor to send one kit to your farm for each test.
- Follow the detailed information in the kit and return the kit to the Davis Laboratory in Davis California.
- Davis will return the lab report to PMHA. A statement will be added to your certificate of registration stating that the DNA test is on file.
- All tests will remain in the Davis California Lab and results will remain with the PMHA office in the Morab's folder.
